Football is the officially sanctioned football program for the Catholic grade schools in the east end of the Diocese of Pittsburgh.
St. Bede is one of eleven diocesan schools who feed into East End Crusaders Football. The other schools include: Aquinas Academy, East Catholic, Holy Sepulcher, Sacred Heart, St. Benedict the Moor, St. Gabriel, St. Joseph, St. Raphael, St. Therese, Sr. Thea Bowman.
It is offered to boys in grades 3 – 8:
Developmental
- 3rd and 4th grades
- Typical game times are 1:00 pm
Junior Varsity (JV)
- 5th and 6th grades
- Typical games times are 2:30 pm or 3:00 pm
Varsity
- 7th and 8th grades
- Typical game times are 4:00 pm or 4:30 pm
East End practices at Sterrett Classical Academy’s field on S. Lang Ave, only a few blocks away from St. Bede. Home games are played at Pittsburgh Central Catholic in Oakland.
The season starts in mid-August with two weeks of practice (Monday – Thursday) before the start of the school year. When the school year begins, the practice schedule becomes:
- Developmental and JV: Tuesday – Thursday
- Varsity: Monday – Thursday
- Games are played Saturdays or Sundays.
East End Crusaders Football’s focuses on quality instruction, fair competition and character development. East End Crusaders Football, working with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, incorporates character coaching into its weekly game plan. This program not only encourages the boys, but all parents as well.
